Casting dos and don’ts to land that job!

The casting process can be a long and tedious one. It is very important to get talent with the right “look” or “sound” to represent a company or product. Booking a job may not be guaranteed as the selection process often has several prospects. However here are some useful tips to improve your chances of securing that job!

Always make a great first impression.  First impressions are lasting, hence not only is it important to be punctual but to be personable.  Castings often entail several candidates all of whom are potential prospects for booking.  Therefore, there needs to be something that sets you apart and distinguishes you from the rest of pack.

Always be on time. This may seem obvious, but unfortunately we often fall victim to bad habits and poor time management.  As the popular saying goes time is money.  If you are late for casting chances are you will be late on the job.  Agencies do not want to spend a longer time than planned in studio or on set as this automatically increases their expenses.  Therefore if you are given a specific time to be on set, ensure that you are early and ready to work.  This is especially critical when shoots are scheduled around a specific time to facilitate the creative for an advertisement.

Preparation is key, if you are required to learn a script please take every step necessary to do so.  One may also be required to take certain items to the shoot depending on the budget for production.  However if you are unable to source requested items, be sure to inform the relevant personnel in advance.  Failure to do so may result in panic to obtain the necessary items that could very well be avoided with sufficient notice.

In some instances based on projects deadlines, agencies may not be able to view talent prior to booking.  If you are required to submit pictures of yourself for casting, they must be a true reflection of your appearance.  If you have changed significantly it is important to inform the agency so that a current profile of your appearance is kept at all times.  Failure to satisfy this requirement can compromise the agency’s credibility and reputation. Moreover it will certainly not improve your chances of getting the job.

Listen and follow direction.  At this point you’ve gotten the job but you are not yet in the clear.  Once on location it is important that you listen attentively to the direction given on set.  This is imperative, not only for ensuring client satisfaction but also for securing work for future projects.

Be professional.  No one likes to work with someone with a negative attitude.  Leave your personal problems behind when on set.  Understand that you are being hired to communicate a message hence one needs to immerse themselves into the character.  Do not be distracted.

Do not complain.  Before the day of shoot amenities such as hair, makeup and wardrobe are usually provided and details regarding what you are required to do explained.  Do not agree with predetermined conditions and complain about the long waits, wardrobe etc.  Remember, no one likes a complainer but everyone likes a hard worker.
